“bangtan remixed: a critical bts reader”

Bangtan Remixed delves into the cultural impact of celebrated K-Pop boy band BTS, exploring their history, aesthetics, fan culture, and capitalist moment. The collection’s contributors—who include artists, scholars, journalists, activists, and fans—approach BTS through inventive and wide-ranging transnational perspectives. Bangtan Remixed shows how one band can inspire millions of fans and provide a broad range of insights into contemporary social and political life.

Artist was tasked to create an illustration for the cover of the book that pays tribute to the 7 members of BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan). The cover showcases the importance of each member’s contribution to the legacy of BTS. Bangtan Remixed explores the impact BTS have made on society.

Members shown above in order from left to right:

Kim Namjoon (RM), Kim Seokjin (JIN), Min Yoongi (SUGA), Jung Hoseok (J-HOPE), Park Jimin (JIMIN), Kim Taehyung (V), Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook).

Artist developed multiple sketches and renditions of the BTS members. Each finalized image went through multiple stages including: inital sketching, traditional inking, digitization, editing, and final linework. An example of each stage is shown here using Jin’s drawing.

Final stages of the illustration required compiling multiple variations of a final composition for the cover. The final composition was then translated from a traditional sketch into a finalized clean digital line image. Images above show the final compositions in traditional and digital formats. The final book cover utilized the final digital illustration that was produced.
